Holding Serve - Persevering On and Off the Court (Paperback): Michael Chang Holding Serve - Persevering On and Off the Court (Paperback)
Michael Chang; As told to Mike Yorkey
R409 R306 Discovery Miles 3 060 Save R103 (25%) Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Often characterized as David facing Goliath on the tennis court, at 5'9" and 150 pounds Michael Chang is used to playing with the big hitters. What he lacks in stature, he makes up for in determination. A serious contender at any Grand Slam event, his bold statement of faith in God makes him a role model we can all look up to. "What's nice," Michael says, "is that, as long as my priorities are straight, I'm able to go out with the mentality to really leave the winning and losing up to the Lord." In Holding Serve readers get a unique glimpse at Team Chang, Michael's powerful family unit that he credits with much of his success. Michael also shares the story of how he became a Christian and the central role his faith has played in his achievements.

The Political Economy of Adjustment Throughout and Beyond the Eurozone Crisis - What Have We Learned? (Paperback): Michele... The Political Economy of Adjustment Throughout and Beyond the Eurozone Crisis - What Have We Learned? (Paperback)
Michele Chang, Federico Steinberg, Francisco Torres
R1,273 Discovery Miles 12 730 Ships in 9 - 15 working days

This volume focuses on the aftermath of the euro crisis and whether the reforms have brought about lasting changes to the economic and political structures of the crisis countries or if the changes were short-term and easily abandoned post-bailout and post-recovery. Starting with an analysis of the state of euro area governance at the onset of the crisis and the ensuing reforms, the book considers structural conditions as well as those specific to the domestic political economy of most of the countries affected by the crisis, including Greece, Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Italy. It presents up-to-date and incisive analysis of the aftermath of the crisis and suggests how we can situate it within our understanding of different national growth models in Europe. This book will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners interested in the Euro Crisis, Economic and Monetary Union, European Union and European politics and more broadly to Comparative Politics, Political Economy, International Relations, Economics, Finance, Business and Industry.

Redefining European Economic Governance (Paperback): Michele Chang, Georg Menz, Mitchell P Smith Redefining European Economic Governance (Paperback)
Michele Chang, Georg Menz, Mitchell P Smith
R1,257 Discovery Miles 12 570 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The global financial crisis and sovereign debt crisis exposed the inadequacy of European economic governance. Despite the multitude of new mechanisms and institutions that have arisen over the last few years, many contend that economic governance remains inadequate and the EU must integrate even further to calm still-volatile markets. A tension exists between creating effective instruments that will not overstep the authority delegated to an EU that has integrated economically but not politically. Can the EU's economic governance system satisfy the demands of markets and politics? Relevant issues include the ability of supranational institutions to dictate policy to national governments, the harmonization of economic policies and institutions across Europe, and a substantial increase in the transfer of funds across borders. Can monetary union continue without political union? How will the new institutions alter the distribution of power between EU institutions as well as between member states? This edited volume analyzes the major policy challenges and institutional mechanisms at the EU- and international levels to combat the global financial crisis and the EU's sovereign debt crisis such as financial integration, fiscal cooperation, and the rising power of the ECB. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of European Integration.

Health and wellbeing are significantly influenced by how professionals plan, design and manage the environment. This book supports those working in the built environment and public health sectors, with the knowledge and insight to maximise health improvement through planning and land use decisions. Supported by examples of policy and approaches, it focuses on implementation and delivery, and sets out what is needed to achieve healthier environments within the parameters of legislative and policy frameworks. It demonstrates how when we harness the art and science of public health spatial planning, can we begin to effect changes to the policies and decisions that shape population health.

Synthetic Jungle - Poems (Paperback): Michael Chang Synthetic Jungle - Poems (Paperback)
Michael Chang
R455 R370 Discovery Miles 3 700 Save R85 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

A new poetry collection from award-winning author Michael Chang   A vital breath of life arrives in American poetry with Synthetic Jungle, the latest collection from acclaimed poet Michael Chang. With poems in a register both hilarious and scathing, Synthetic Jungle effortlessly bashes convention while simultaneously rebuilding the language we use to communicate our fears and joys.   Synthetic Jungle is a collection written by a brilliant jester who winks at you as you catch their every reference before sharing a laugh at your own self-satisfaction. Themes of identity, sexuality, and literacy play out in a dizzying rhythm of microtheaters. Readers will find themselves giggling, snorting, and guffawing their way through this work: whether at a repudiation of the literary landscape or a critique of a failing justice system, to laugh along with Chang is to recognize your mistakes and, ultimately, grow from them.   Fractal and kinetic in the quick-witted spirit of John Ashbery and Emily Dickinson, Chang’s tender poems dance around, between, and through the personal and philosophical. Synthetic Jungle is as sweet as it is grand, and beneath its sarcastic grin reverberates an immense, open heart.

Re-Indigenizing Ecological Consciousness and the Interconnectedness to Indigenous Identities (Hardcover): Michelle Montgomery Re-Indigenizing Ecological Consciousness and the Interconnectedness to Indigenous Identities (Hardcover)
Michelle Montgomery; Contributions by Paulette Blanchard, Michael Chang, Mary DuPuis, Merisa Jones, …
R2,809 Discovery Miles 28 090 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The authors of Re-Indigenizing Ecological Consciousness and the Interconnectedness to Indigenous Identities share the diversity and complexities of the Indigenous context of worldviews, examining relationships between humans and other living beings within an eco-conscious lens. Michelle Montgomery's edited volume shows that we belong not only to a human community, but to a community of all nature as well. The contributors demonstrate that the reciprocity of Indigenous knowledges is inclusive and represents worldviews for regenerative solutions and the need to realign our view of the environment as a "who" rather than an "it." This reciprocity is intertwined as an obligation of environmental ethics to acknowledge the attributes of Indigenous knowledges as not merely a body of knowledge but as multiple layers or levels of placed-based knowledges, identities, and lived experiences.

Almanac of Useless Talents (Paperback): Michael Chang Almanac of Useless Talents (Paperback)
Michael Chang
R342 Discovery Miles 3 420 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Fence poetry editor and rising star Michael Chang's Almanac of Useless Talents is a must-read for poetry lovers and newbies alike. This is a useless Almanac. There's no seasonal data, only poems good for leaving the club in haute couture with mid-level poets, for ambiguous sex, mouthy seductions, shoulder-turns of cold cock disrespect. Part confessional, part experimental, and completely original, Chang is a poet read in classrooms and on phone screens with equal fervor. Each poem deftly deforms self into outrageous performance. This poetry snaps and twists so fast you'll miss things: the intricate formal craft, the bitchy wordplay. A dopamine rush delving into desire's throbbing networks of flesh and circuit, identity, relationships, Aznness, queerdom, and more that would arouse Ashbery envy, Chang's playful style is edgy, surprising, and delightful. In Chang's world, sentiment is decor: come face the amusing ever-ache of our desires or go ahead and try to outrun them.

Identifying Novel DNA Damage Response Genes Using Functional Genomics (Paperback): Michael Chang Identifying Novel DNA Damage Response Genes Using Functional Genomics (Paperback)
Michael Chang
R2,063 Discovery Miles 20 630 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

DNA damage is a fairly common event and, if left unrepaired, can lead to genomic instability, a hallmark of cancer cells. My Ph.D. work, described in this thesis, has focused primarily on elucidating how cells combat DNA damage to maintain genomic integrity. To fully understand the DNA damage response, it is important that all the components required for this process be identified. To this end, I took functional genomic approaches using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae to identify genes required for coping with DNA damage. Specifically, I conducted a screen to identify genes required for resistance to a DNA damaging agent, methyl methanesulfonate. Using genome-wide genetic interaction screens, I helped identify ELG1, deletion of which causes DNA replication defects, genomic instability, and an inability to properly recover from DNA damage during S phase. I also used two-dimensional hierarchical clustering of synthetic genetic interaction data determined by large-scale genetic network analysis to identify RMI1, which encodes a new member of the highly conserved Sgs1-Top3 complex that is an important suppressor of genomic instability.

Collection of five animated features following the adventures of the DC Comics superhero. Superman: Unbound, Superman: Doomsday, Superman vs Elite, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

In Superman: Unbound (2013), with the help of his cousin Supergirl (voice of Molly C. Quinn), Superman (Matt Bomer) goes up against extraterrestrial villain Brainiac (John Noble), who has been wreaking havoc across the universe, stealing cities and destroying planets, including the hero's home Krypton.

With Brainiac now on Earth, Superman does all he can to prevent it, and its people, from meeting the same fate. In Superman: Doomsday (2007), Superman (Adam Baldwin) goes up against his toughest opponent yet when LexCorps unintentionally release a powerful villain known as Doomsday. In an attempt to save the city of Metropolis Superman must engage in a fight to the death.

In Superman Vs The Elite (2012), Superman (George Newbern) questions the methods of The Elite, a new group of superheroes led by Brit Manchester Black (Robin Atkin Downes), who believe the only way to rid the world of evil is to kill villains. Superman, however, is determined to protect the people of Earth without causing more death. As The Elite's exploits get out of hand, Superman finds himself with no choice but to take them down.

In Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009), Superman (Tim Daly) and Batman (Kevin Conroy) join forces to destroy a Kryptonite meteor that is heading directly towards Earth. With new US President Lex Luthor (Clancy Brown) wanting to take the glory for the meteor's destruction, however, Superman finds himself accused of murder and both he and Batman, with the help of Power Girl (Allison Mack), must successfully defeat an army of villains before they can continue with their plans to save the world.

In the sequel, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse (2010), Superman (Daly)'s cousin Kara Zor-El (Summer Glau) arrives in Gotham City but causes problems when she is unable to control her powers. After training at Themyscira, Kara is captured by the evil Darkseid (Andre Braugher). With the help of some fellow heroes, including Batman (Conroy), Superman goes to rescue his cousin.

Economic and Monetary Union (Paperback, 1st Ed. 2090): Michele Chang Economic and Monetary Union (Paperback, 1st Ed. 2090)
Michele Chang
R1,630 Discovery Miles 16 300 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This accessible introductory text provides a comprehensive and accessible account of the evolution of the Eurozone, from its beginnings in fixed exchange rate systems through to the aftermath of the sovereign debt crisis. It examines why the EMU was created, what went wrong to bring about the global financial crisis, and why countries were affected so differently. It assesses the impact of monetary union both in Europe and beyond and evaluates the prospects for the Euro as an international currency. Recognising that political union has long been seen as part of monetary integration, and that Eurozone membership often impacts domestic policy, Chang widens the scope of her evaluation to include consider effects and developments that are not purely economic in scope. Using theories drawn from economics and political science, this book provides students with an up-to-date analysis of the recent reforms undertaken, grounded in a long-term perspective of the trajectory of European integration. As well as suiting upper-level undergraduate and Master's courses on European Monetary Union, this text is beneficial for students of Politics, International Relations and European Studies on more general courses to foster an understanding of the impact of the EMU on the wider functioning of the EU. The text is filled with figures, maps, timelines and other pedagogical features to ensure this topic accessible to students of all levels.

Racial Politics in an Era of Transnational Citizenship - The 1996 'Asian Donorgate' Controversy in Perspective... Racial Politics in an Era of Transnational Citizenship - The 1996 'Asian Donorgate' Controversy in Perspective (Hardcover, New)
Michael Chang
R3,488 Discovery Miles 34 880 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Asian American activist and political communities viewed 1996 as a watershed year, in which the Democratic Party took seriously its Asian American constituency until the "Asian Donorgate" campaign finance controversy complicated that representation. In the ensuing public discourse Chinese Americans, and by proxy all Asian Americans, were depicted as foreigners subversively attempting to buy influence with U.S. politicians. While neither disputing nor confirming the guilt of the individuals charged in this episode with raising illegal foreign campaign money, Racial Politics in an Era of Transnational Citizenship highlights the conflation of Asian transnational capital and government interests with Asian Americans and the resulting racialization, foreignization, and even criminalization of this large community. Scholar Michael Chang asks, Will the perception of the Asian American as the "perpetual foreigner" continue to reproduce itself uncritically, heightening during times of media-supported nationalism? This incisive work contributes greatly to current debates on civil rights and on the meaning of "citizenship" and "belonging" among a transnational community and in a globalized world."
